CityUHK's Five Subjects Enter Global Top 50

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has once again demonstrated exceptional global competitiveness in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, published by the internationally renowned higher education ranking body Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). This year, CityUHK has 20 subjects ranked in the global top 100, five of which break into the top 50. Notably, Materials Science ranked 39th in the world and 1st in Hong Kong, reflecting CityUHK’s unwavering commitment to rigorous academic standards and innovative knowledge exchange, with its academic and research excellence receiving further international recognition.

CityUHK's Materials Science has maintained a position within the global top 100 for two consecutive years. In 2026, Materials Science entered the top 50 for the first time, climbing from 52nd to 39th, and topped the Hong Kong rankings for the first time, signalling the subject’s significant and far-reaching potential impact on global societal development.

Furthermore, in the U.S. News & World Report 2025–2026 Best Global Universities Rankings, Materials Science was ranked 5th globally and 1st in Hong Kong. In the 2025 Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), it also ranked 1st in Hong Kong. In 2025, CityUHK joined hands with the world-renowned pioneer in materials science — École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) — to establish a joint institute dedicated to advancing frontier, world-class research in the field.

In recent years, CityUHK has delivered outstanding results across multiple major global subject rankings. In the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, 7 subjects entered the global top 100, with Law and Business & Economics entering the global top 50 and Asia top 10. Additionally, in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), CityUHK has 27 subjects ranked in the global top 100, with Library & Information Science, Public Administration, and Automation & Control placing in the global top 10, and 12 subjects ranking 1st in Hong Kong.
