Selecting your university major in Year 2

May 07,2025

Imagine spending one year exploring and another year gaining experience before finally confirming your university major—would this approach help you more accurately identify your true interests?

City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) (CityUHK (DG)) has introduced an innovative "major-free admission" model, granting first-year undergraduates a one-year exploration period to discover their academic interests through general education, interdisciplinary learning and industry engagement before declaring majors.

At the end of April 2025, CityUHK (DG) hosted a Major Selection Fair, where professors presented undergraduate programme details and career prospects, enabling face-to-face dialogues with students.

Breaking from traditional fixed-major systems, CityUHK (DG) has employed a broad-category cultivation approach. Students undertake general education courses, cross-disciplinary lectures, and hands-on projects in their first year, with two opportunities to switch majors after academic evaluations in Year 2.

High-achieving students can access guaranteed pathways to master’s and doctoral programmes. Freshman Wu Xinyue shared how exposure to hardware applications shifted her initial preference from computer science to intelligent manufacturing engineering.

Leveraging an international faculty, with 80% coming from City University of Hong Kong under consistent academic standards, CityUHK (DG) delivers fully English-taught programmes to cultivate global competencies.

Industry partnerships with over 20 leading organisations offer students site visits and collaborative projects. Practical experiences, such as lab tours at Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, bridge academic knowledge with real-world applications.

During May 2025 admissions events, CityUHK (DG) attracted over 45,000 online and offline participants. Vice President Prof Li Juan highlighted CityUHK (DG)’s commitment to nurturing career-ready graduates through interactive, industry-aligned education.

Currently offering four undergraduate programmes, alongside seven postgraduate disciplines, CityUHK (DG) serves both domestic and international students, addressing talent demands in the Greater Bay Area.
